Scope and Contents
This series (32 files) consists of materials from 1938 to 2007 that provide documentation of the activities of the Student Senate and it predecessors, the Student Union and the Student Council, and includes minutes, correspondence, topical discussion materials, administrative documents, clippings and booklets. The first Student Council was organized in 1919 as a joint council of the high school and college bodies and had three representatives from each high school class and three from the college, as there were only 12 college students at the time. In 1938, the constitution was drafted for a new Student Union that would consist of members from the sophomore, junior and senior classes and would comprise the financial, house, activities and freshman orientation committees. The leaders of the Student Union were called the Board of Councilors. In 1959, the Student Union became the umbrella organization for the Board of Councilors and the Student Council. In the early 1970s, the Student Council was getting calls for a more decentralized organization, and in 1974, the Student Government was formed. It operated until September 1977 when it was renamed the Student Senate, the governing body that is still in existence in 2018. In 1970, the first Tripartite committee was formed to examine decision-making within the college and included members of the faculty, staff and student senate. By 2016, there were 16 specialized tripartite committees outlined in the Student Senate Constitution concentrating on a variety of areas that include Access, Board of Trustees, Mission and Ministry and Student Welfare.
