Avoid Colloquialisms

Differentiate between conversational English and formal written English.  Pretend you are writing an article to be published in a journal. Wording on left is example of colloquialism:

Kid(s) = child(ren)

Mom = mother

Dad = father

Guy = person

Tons of = numerous

Honestly crazy, insane = honestly astounding

Wild = amazing

Look a little bit at = take a cursory view; quick overview

Big deal = extremely important

Bunch = collection

This then . . . = consequently (if causal); subsequently (if temporal)

Contemporary = at that time period; current = now

Go on = take place, occur

Important Differentiations

That (thing or object); who (person)

“Between” when two

“Among” when three or more

“Distinct” emphasizes a major commonality while there are minor variations: E.g., Identical twins are distinct, not different.  Christianity claims there is One God who is three distinct Persons.  (They are the same but distinguished by their relationships.)

Since (deals with time); because (is causal)

That (when acting as a subject of a verb); which (when the subject of a description)
