Find books on a specific topic

Find books on a specific topic:

Note that books are good for general information on a topic. You'll want to search broadly for content. Know that a book may not be the best resource for your research.

  1. Start on the library homepage: https://www.rockhurst.edu/library
  2. On the Catalog tab, change the drop-down option to Subject (LC) and enter the general topic you're seeking. This might be a person's last name, an event, a concept or process, or something else.
screenshot of subject search in catalog
  3. You will not see a list of books or items but a list of terms instead. Some subject terms are so broad that the catalog might recommend related terms, found by clicking the hyperlink like the one in line 1 in the example below. The topic may also have a variety of related or more specific terms. In the example below, there are 38 items that are about Protestantism broadly. However, if your interest lies in modern protestantism specifically, you may find the 3 items affiliated with the subject term 'Protestantism -- 20th century' more helpful. You can access the list of specific titles associated with each subject term by clicking on that hyperlinked term.
search results for a Subject search in the catalog
PRO TIP
Browse the list of related subject terms for more targeted resources.

  1. If a subject search is not yielding any results, try a keyword search. This should result in a list of library items. Be sure to keep your search broad. Put quotation marks around words to search as a phrase.

  2. Click on the title to view details about an item. As in the example below, this could include a list of chapter titles, noted in the Contents section and other related subject terms, noted in the LC Subject section. These details should help you determine if an item will be relevant to your needs.

Use a call number to locate a specific book:

What is a call number? A call number is a group of letters and/or numbers that identifies a specific item in a library and provides a way for organizing library holdings. Different libraries use different systems, but most academic libraries - including Rockhurst - use the Library of Congress (or LC) system.

  1. You'll find a call number associated with any physical item you find in the catalog. Confirm the Status of the item is AVAILABLE before making note of the Location and Call Number.

What is MOBIUS?

What is MOBIUS?

MOBIUS logo

MOBIUS is a library consortium made up of 66 academic libraries, some public and special libraries, and the Missouri State Library who actively share resources among their collective users.

Why does this matter?

Rockhurst students aren't limited to the resources on the shelf in the library. Users have access to millions of resources throughout the region including large institutions like UMKC and MU as well as more specialized collections from places like Conception Abbey and Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College.

How can I take advantage of MOBIUS?

Try searching the MOBIUS catalog to view all consortial member holdings. (We recommend searching the KC-Towers catalog first. This is a group of MOBIUS libraries in our region.
